Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about learning Japanese with our SRS system

How do I get started learning Japanese?

Start by browsing our vocabulary database or try one of our pre-made decks. Add words to your learning queue, then begin studying with our 4-phase system. We recommend starting with basic hiragana and katakana words before moving to kanji.

What is SRS and how does it work?

Spaced Repetition System (SRS) is a scientifically-proven learning technique that schedules reviews at increasing intervals. When you answer correctly, the word appears less frequently. When you struggle, it appears more often.

This method maximizes retention while minimizing study time, helping you build long-term memory efficiently. Check out our How It Works page for detailed information.

What are the 4 learning phases?

Phase 1: Kana → English (recognize hiragana/katakana readings)

Phase 2: English → Kana (recall hiragana/katakana from meaning)

Phase 3: Kanji → English (recognize kanji readings)

Phase 4: English → Kanji (recall kanji from meaning)

You unlock each phase as you progress, ensuring a solid foundation before moving forward.

How much time should I study each day?

We recommend 15-30 minutes daily for consistent progress. The key is regular practice rather than long cramming sessions. Our SRS system will show you when words are due for review, so you can study efficiently based on your schedule.

Do you support JLPT and Genki levels?

Yes! Our vocabulary is tagged with JLPT levels (N5-N1) and Genki textbook chapters (1-23). You can filter words by these levels and focus your study on specific curriculum requirements.

How do I track my progress?

Your dashboard shows your study streak, total words learned, session history, and accuracy rates. Each word progresses through SRS levels from Apprentice to Enlightened, and you can see your progress across all 4 learning phases.

Can I add my own words or import word lists?

Individual words can be added to your queue from our curated database. Admins can import CSV word lists with full vocabulary data including readings, definitions, JLPT levels, and pitch accent information.

Is there a mobile app?

Our web app is fully responsive and works great on mobile devices. Simply bookmark our site on your phone's home screen for a native app-like experience. A dedicated mobile app is planned for the future.

Do you include pitch accent information?

Yes! Many of our words include pitch accent patterns to help you learn proper Japanese pronunciation. This information is displayed alongside the word details to aid in speaking practice.

What happens if I miss my reviews?

Don't worry! Missed reviews will accumulate and wait for you. The SRS algorithm adjusts to your actual review patterns. However, consistent daily practice will give you the best results for long-term retention.

Do you teach kanji radicals and components?

Yes! Our kanji database includes radical information to help you understand kanji structure and composition. This makes learning kanji more systematic and helps with recognition and recall.

Is the service free? Do I need an account?

You can browse our vocabulary database without an account, but you'll need to sign up (free) to track your progress and use the SRS learning system. We offer both free and premium tiers - check our pricing page for details.
