Understanding Radicals

Radicals (部首) are the building blocks of kanji characters. Every kanji is composed of one or more radicals that provide clues about meaning and pronunciation.

The 214 Kangxi radicals shown here are the traditional classification system used in dictionaries. Each radical has a number, stroke count, and typical position within kanji.

Tip: Learning radicals helps you recognize patterns, remember meanings, and look up unfamiliar kanji in dictionaries.
