Understanding the Japanese Language Proficiency Test levels from N5 to N1.

What is JLPT?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognized test of Japanese language proficiency. It has five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced), and is used to measure and certify Japanese language skills for non-native speakers.

JLPT N5

Beginner

Basic level. Can understand some basic Japanese.

  • Vocabulary: ~800 words
  • Kanji: ~100 characters
  • Study time: 325-600 hours

Can read hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. Understand basic phrases and expressions.

JLPT N4

Elementary

Elementary level. Can understand basic Japanese.

  • Vocabulary: ~1,500 words
  • Kanji: ~300 characters
  • Study time: 575-1,000 hours

Can read and understand passages on familiar topics written in basic vocabulary and kanji.

JLPT N3

Intermediate

Intermediate level. Can understand Japanese used in everyday situations.

  • Vocabulary: ~3,750 words
  • Kanji: ~650 characters
  • Study time: 950-1,700 hours

Can understand coherent texts on concrete and abstract topics. Bridge between elementary and advanced.

JLPT N2

Upper Intermediate

Upper intermediate level. Can understand Japanese in a variety of circumstances.

  • Vocabulary: ~6,000 words
  • Kanji: ~1,000 characters
  • Study time: 1,600-2,800 hours

Required for university admission and many jobs in Japan. Can handle most daily situations.

JLPT N1

Advanced

Advanced level. Can understand Japanese used in a variety of circumstances.

  • Vocabulary: ~10,000 words
  • Kanji: ~2,000 characters
  • Study time: 3,000-4,800 hours

Near-native level. Can understand complex texts and nuanced expressions. Required for professional work.
