~ですか
turns a statement into a question; asks whether something is the case
Polite
Explanation
This structure is used to form questions by adding か to the end of a polite statement.
The sentence structure itself does not change; intonation alone is not used to signal a question in polite Japanese.
Questions formed with this pattern can be yes/no questions or can include question words such as 何, 何時, 何歳, or 何年生.
The topic is often omitted if it is clear from context, which is common in Japanese conversation.
Formation
Statement + か
Noun + は + noun + です + か
Usage Notes
It is not customary to use a question mark in Japanese sentences.
Question words remain in place; they are not moved to the front of the sentence.
The word 何 has different pronunciations depending on what follows it.
This pattern is polite and neutral in tone.
